Vitamin C: What It Can Do For You
by Eva Friederichs
Vitamin C - Its Function
Scientists have discovered that Vitamin C is a major component in many
cellular processes. It is necessary for the growth of new tissue, the formation of
collagen, elastin, and the healing process of a wound.
Vitamin C is necessary for the formation of cartilage, bones, and dentine in teeth. It
maintains the integrity of our capillaries, prevents bruising and helps to ensure
microcirculation to the epidermis.
Vitamin C protects Vitamin A against oxidation, improves the benefits of Vitamin B 12
and compensates for deficiencies of pantothenic acid, another B Vitamin.
The role of Vitamin C is potentially important for the prevention of certain forms of
heart disease, cancer, and allergic disorders, and is a possible treatment for viral
infections including the common cold and flu.
Vitamin C is most well known for its antioxidant properties. What exactly does that
mean?
Why is an antioxidant an advantage?
Today, many estheticians are working with oxygen from tanks and oxygen delivery
products. and they might not be aware of the dangers to the skin and body's health of
oxidants. Oxygen and other free radicals are strong oxidants that are chemically
aggressive in oxidizing other substances. These free radicals are the major cause
premature skin aging and antioxidants are able to detoxify these free radicals into
non-damaging substances to the skin.
These are fairly recent findings. Prior to its new use, Vitamin C -- ascorbic acid --
was used in products, particularly creams, only to keep the water phase (Hydrophilic)
from oxidizing.
Vitamin E used to perform the same function for the oil-soluble (Lipophilic)
phase. It is known as d-alpha tocopherol or dl-tocopherol. Vitamin C and E together have a
synergistic action that improves the activity of both.
If you have studied nutrition you have heard or read that Vitamin C has anti-aging
properties when taken internally. This is first through the synthesis of collagen in the
dermal layer of the skin. Secondly, taking it internally his been the only way to assure
ourselves of adequate amounts as Vitamin C cannot be produced or stored by the human body.
The body's natural metabolic functions and the by-products of stress cause depletion of
available stores and little is usually available for the skin's needs. But, how much
absorption, when taken internally, is still an unknown factor and until more is known we
should take in adequate amounts through food sources and Vitamin C supplements to build
good health and help to prevent viral infections.
Dangers of Smoking
Smoking literally burns up Vitamin C internally and externally. A smoker's skin ages
faster than normal. Smoking prevents the skin from healing because the free radical
control is diminished.
Hyper Pigmentation
The most exciting new findings about Vitamin C are in relationship to topical
application to prevent hyper pigmentation and control sun damage. Vitamin C has been proven
to be photo protective against UVA and UVB. It does this by inhibiting the skin's
inflammatory response to ultraviolet light. According to Dr. Pinnell in an article in
"Cosmetics and Toiletries," September 1997, "Protection against UVA appears
to be a particularly strong and desirable benefit as sunscreens do not adequately provide
this. Vitamin C appears to be involved in thee skin's photo protective reaction".
Melanin skin pigment forms through the progressive oxidation of the amino acid
tyrosine. The main steps in the process of melanogenesis were analyzed by Raper and Mason.
The major oxidation steps, from tyrosine to dopaquinone, are catalyzed by tyrosinase. The
degree of skin pigmentation can be regulated by controlling the melanogenesis reaction.
Vitamin C can inhibit or slow down the activity of tyrosinase and suppress the production
of melanin. Topical application can help to prevent freckles and brown age spots, and
improve skin tone. Once applied to the skin's surface it cannot be rubbed off, washed off,
or perspired off for three days. So, the protection is long-lived.
Sun Damage Control
Vitamin C amounts have been shown to be considerably lower in sun damaged skin than in
normal skin. Skin is far less damaged, if Vitamin C is applied before sun exposure, and it
recovers more quickly from sun damage after application. This information leads us to the
assumption that a properly formulated Vitamin C product can prevent and repair sun damage,
helping to reverse aging.
Anti-aging Benefits
As we age, and as cellular functions begin to decline, researchers have determined that
we suffer from both the loss of growth factors, and a decline in the receptor sites which
are an integral part of the bio-molecular processes of renewal and regeneration.
Investigators have concluded that in its role as a co-factor, Vitamin C stimulates
receptor sites and makes it possible for a greater number of growth factors to attach to
individual cells. Through this process, metabolic activity of the cells improves, and
there is more youthful-like metabolic activity.
Better than Before
Although the Vitamin C used in the past has been very unstable in an aqueous or water
solution, the newer ester form of Vitamin C is relatively stable, particularly when
combined with metal iron chelate. In a chelate, the structure of Vitamin C is stabilized
by stronger chemical bonds, which makes it difficult for oxygen and other relative
reactive substances to attack the weak points of Vitamin C. Recently, a number of Vitamin
C chelates with magnesium and other groups have been successfully developed.
These Vitamin C chelates or derivatives are stable in aqueous solution, making them
suitable for cosmetic Formulations. After topical application, these chelates are easily
absorbed by the skin and release Vitamin C immediately. The chelates of Vitamin C are not
acidic (pH between 5.0 - 6.0) and are very safe to the skin, not like the free, extremely
low acidity Vitamin C of the past.
Magnesium ascorbyl phosphate is a typical Vitamin C chelate and is stable in aqueous
solution under normal conditions. At levels of only 0.01 percent it produces an 88 percent
inhibition of melanin in only 30 days.
Look for combinations of these new antioxidant plus skin lightener regularly touted as
"brighteners" or "faders." The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has
not yet recognized legal standing of their pigment-lightening status.
Our Method
Many forms of Vitamin C have been used in formulations over the past years. Typically a
marketing company jumps on an idea and brings out a product before results are in. I read
the information, work with the chemist on formulations, and test, If I do not see
significant results I keep researching and re-formulating, and when the results start
appearing this is the time I get serious and bring it to you for testing. This
"results oriented goal" in products and services has been our company's mission
and will continue to be, taking all of you into the next century with the latest products
and education.

Crystal C With Enzymes and know that you will be impressed with the results. Again, it is
excellent for all skin types -- male and female.
Eva's Esthetics will continue to be your partner.
Why Eva's?
Because it contains magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, the most stable and effective form of vitamin C in cosmetics today. Many other brands use ascorbic acid, which is highly unstable and can irritate and dehydrate the skin. This gel-based formula penetrates deeper than creams and is much easier to use than watery solutions.
Testimonial: "I am a skin care professional and have tried many different brands of vitamin C. Eva's Crystal C is by far the most effective vitamin C product on the market! I can't recommend it enough!" - Jan Hermann, Maple Valley, WA
